Matilda of Scotland is usually the 'forgotten Matilda', wedged inbetween Matilda of Flanders, her mother-in-law, and Empress Matilda, her daughter. She was a woman who was remembered in the centuries after her death for her piety, but little else. But Matilda was a strong character, choosing to win people over with kindness and charitable change rather than fighting, creating some of London's grandest and first buildings for the time she lived in, and influencing her husband, Henry I, on many laws in his kingdom. This video looks at Matilda o...

The Lost Queen Of England Who Never Knew Freedom | Arbella Stuart

Arbella Stuart should have been a queen of England, heir to Elizabeth I, and able to marry if she wished - but she wouldn't. And the one moment in which she reached out fo...

Yes, it was a real romance. I can't imagine the kingdom's wealthiest man staying with his baby mama for that long, then going back after the coast was clear and a supposed two year break, then marrying her after the royal wretch, the second wife, finally was pushing up daisies. Plus, all his children liked each other and they were all raised together by Katheryn. He remembered his love match with Blanche, and wanted another one, when he finally had the chance again in his old age. Of course I'm going to hope for that. I'm one of their descendants, along with several other million of us.

America (exclusive of the new Comers) wholly so. And in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally of what we call *a swarthy Complexion;* as are *the Germans also, the Saxons only excepted, who with the English, make the principal Body of White People on the Face of the Earth.* I could wish their Numbers were increased* ...why should we in the Sight of Superior Beings, darken its People? why increase the Sons of Africa, by Planting them in America, where we have so fair an Opportunity, *by excluding all Blacks and Tawneys, of increasing the lovely White and Red?"*

Africans were the first people on Earth and _were the first indigenous people to every continent, including Europe._ There's every reason to believe Phillipa was black. The first ancient Europeans were black people called the Grimaldi (aka Gravettian.) What happened to black Europeans? First, the invasion of the Dorians (white Central Asians) in the ancient Hellas (aka ancient Greece) which caused many black Pelasgians to leave the area. Then the Germanic invasions from the 300's to the 500's brought white Central Asians into western Europe. There were _racial tensions_ between black people & whites in Europe and there were hundreds of European wars over hundreds of years, many of them _racial-religious wars_ between Catholicism (the older, mostly black led religion in Europe) and Protestantism (white led religion.) Because of these wars, many black Europeans were either unalived or expelled from the European continent into the Atlantic colonies as indentured servants and slaves.

@@HistorysForgottenPeople I love those ideas!!! Through the first two novels I've written, I've focused on the absolute drama of William and Matilda's children. I want to involve Edith's messy godfather Curthose in some way in her story but Curthose spent this much of the time Edith disappeared from the record on Crusade... 👀 There really is SO much to do with it and I love those blank canvasses afforded authors by forgotten histories, I can't lie. This is cheesy but also I've got books to sell, so if you want to check out the already released first book in my planned series on women in English history, about Matilda of Flanders, The Dragon and the Butterfly by Abby Simpson can be ordered from online retailers! I'm hoping the sequel, centred on another of history's forgotten people in William and Matilda's daughter Constance, will be out soon, but I've got writing the third story about Edith in my sights now. I suggest you read " The Autobiography of Henry VIII" , by Margaret George. It's an excellent book, over 900 pages , but you can hardly stop reading it. It's well reasearched and written. The author let us travel through time into Henry's court, his 6 wives and children. Anne was selfish and she got what she wanted no matter how much pain she brought to others. But she didn't deserve to die the way she did. The real victims were Queen Catherine of Aragon, Mary and later, Elizabeth. Henry, on the other hand, from the most handsome prince in Europe, became an obese monster with an open fetid leg ulcer which gave him a lot of suffering until his death. Maybe karma is real. I also visited England, the Tower, St Paul's Cathedral were many kings are buried, saw the wax effigies in the basement, especially Elizabeth's. I also visited Windsor Castle where Henry and J Seymor are buried. I've read other books on the wives and mistresses of H.VIII.All a very fascinating reading. I love history. Great video. Thanks.

So we don’t know this young ladies birthdate but we except that this letter is “ in her own hand” I seriously doubt Jane Bohlin Would have played romantic liaison after what happened to her sister and the lover’s testimony changed as pressure was applied and he said just enough to keep himself alive while denying the act that would have killed him. I doubt any of these women were fn around unless it was a desperate act to get a child that could be passed off as an flaccid king no one would have ever dared even whisper that that would have ended the kingdom …. I think deep down Henry knew exactly what was happening and that’s why it haunted him so but what could he do? Elizabeth may have been scared into never marrying and yes this may have been Ann Boylyns ultimate revenge ending the Tudor line but remember the entire reason the crown wasn’t allowed to pass to women is in so doing you change the head of state since all heads of state were closely or losely related at that time and still are she would have had to marry a royal from another country so let’s say France end their children would have more political ties to France than England and been French it would effectively overthrow the kingdom by a foreign power. This is why the most recently passed Queen Elizabeth husband Prince Philip had to abdicate all of his royal titles from Austria I believe? In order to be her Queen consort… it literally can’t be done safely in monarchies any other way. I don’t think abdication was a concept yet . So being the “virgin” queen or at least never marrying and doing whatever it took to not birth a child and appointing a proper English family with valid claim to the throne upon her passing was the only way to transition power without a bloody civil war in absence of a male heir… and the country was depleted and very tired of these after Bloody Mary and lady Jane grey and all the other resulting blood shed surrounding Henry VIIIs obvious inability to produce a male healthy enough to live and take the throne ( way too much inbreeding to keep the money at the top) this finally convinced the political powers clergy to except a unusual arrangement… by this time all the in fighting was leaving England seriously vulnerable to invasion by another country… the male succession is much less about mysogeny or a woman’s ability to rule than it is about titles and geopolitics and wealth distribution… to bad they weren’t willing to think outside of the box with one of Catherine of Aragon’s daughters like they would be Elizabeth years later all the lives lost in separating from the Catholic faith and as bad and corrupt as it was none of that changed except in the Church of England there isn’t even the perception of separation of church and state and all political and religious authority rest with one person instead of two and Henry could have appointed a male heir outside of his direct line but you know if your delusional enough to think your the supreme authority bar none appointed by God himself well… I guess your petty psychologically invested in your golden seed…. Ugh🤦‍♀️ and honestly the worst part is here in 2024 “the more things change the more they remain the same” we put different labels and window dressing on it now but it’s all still just massive human tragedy for the sole purpose of making sure the haves keep having and the nots keep noting….

As @jawo8754 said, Matilda (and her brother William) were the only legitimate children of Henry I, so when William Adelin died years later, she became the king's only heir. Definitely not illegitimate, although Stephen I tried to assert this claim by arguing her mother had indeed been a nun when she married - this would have invalidated the marriage and made Matilda illegitimate. But regardless of whether Matilda of Scotland ever really 'took the veil', she was found to not be a nun by a council of Bishops, which made it a moot point.

For the question, Ik I asked this once, but it was a good while ago, and you’ve done videos on lots of them, so who do you list as your fav and least fav English, then British Queen consort? My favourite hasn’t changed, it’s still Emma of Normandy, I want to tell her story to everyone I meet😭 the way she turned a most likely forced marriage with Cnut into a marriage of mutual respect and almost equality (as much as the times would allow) is epic, and the way she got two sons on the throne shows her power. For least favourite, gotta go with Anne Boleyn, sorry.

Hmm...for favourite English, I can't decide between Emma of Normandy (for all the reasons you said), Matilda of Flanders, or Anne of Cleves. It's too hard to choose! 😢The worst is equally difficult, it's either Anne Boleyn (with you on that one, even if I do have some sympathy for her), or maybe Isabella of Angoulême, who doesn't really seem to have brought much of anything to the table. For British, um...my actual favourite consort might be Prince George of Denmark and Norway, but as he's not a queen he can't count! 😂 Either Mary of Teck (who seems to have been a genuinely nice person who wanted to do good stuff) or poor Queen Caroline of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel who had to put up with a lot. The worst would probably be a very recent one, Queen Mother Elizabeth (Bowes-Lyon). I know a few people who (militarily and in staff roles) had to deal her when she was alive, and apparently she was cantankerous, bad-tempered, snobby and got worse when she had a drink, which she was apparently quite fond of! Having said that, it's maybe unfair as I'm going off what others have said. 😂

Matilda of Scotland - Wife of Henry I , mother of another matilda ( matriarch of the Plantaganets ) and William Adelin . Her son was the next in line of the throne. But died in the White Ship accident and plunged the country to Anarchy.
